A park ranger will guide you into the beautiful backcountry on one of eight different ranger adventure hikes. Explore Yellowstone's backcountry on a half day hike with a park ranger. Visit lesser known hydrothermal areas, explore wildlife habitat, and experience a slice of Yellowstone's wilderness. Program locations change daily. Hikes are rated from easy to strenuous.
These very popular half day fee hikes take place every day (except Sunday) from 14 Jun through 28 Aug 04. Hikes are offered from the Canyon, Fishing Bridge / East Entrance, Mammoth Hot Springs, Old Faithful and Roosevelt / Tower areas.
These Ranger Adventure Hikes range from easy walks to strenuous treks. Some hikes are not recommended for people with heart or breathing problems or other serious medical conditions. Inquire at a park visitor center to find the right hike for you. Tickets are available at: Albright (Mammoth), Canyon, Fishing Bridge, Grant and Old Faithful Visitor Centers. Hike this lesser used trail through meadows filled with wildflowers to a spectacular view of Hayden Valley. This valley is known for abundant waterfowl and other wildlife such as bison, elk, coyotes and bears. On the return, enjoy Clear Lake, a backcountry thermal feature.

Beaver Ponds Ramble
Cool aspen groves, Douglas-fir woodlands and sunny meadows greet you as you walk the undulating terrain of this loop trail. Several tranquil ponds along the way hold the promise of some wildlife sightings, and the views of northern Yellowstone are spectacular.

Elevation Gain: 600 feet / 186 meters.
Scenic Snow Pass
Hike among the strange, jumbled boulders of the Hoodoos and trek through groves of aspen and Douglas-fir as we ascend Snow Pass. From there, we'll revel in the mountain scenery and seasonal wildflowers of the Gallatin Range as we explore this delightful and diverse corner of Yellowstone.
Type of Trail: Loop; maintained trail. Hikers afraid of heights may be uncomfortable on a short stretch with a sharp dropoff.

Shoshone Lake Discovery
The lush meadows along DeLacy Creek are alive with colorful seasonal wildflowers and a variety of wildlife. Follow DeLacy Creek to the pebbly shore of Shoshone Lake, the largest backcountry lake in the United States and a beautiful destination for this backcountry hike.
Type of Trail: Out and back; maintained trail.
Elevation Gain: 200 feet / 60 meters.
Lone Star Stroll
Walk through cool forests along the scenic Firehole River and visit Lone Star Geyser, one of Yellowstone's hidden treasures, on this family activity. Lone Star is an active geyser with a massive geyser cone that erupts a sparkling jet of steaming water every few hours. This easy riverside stroll follows an old paved road and is accessible to most.
Type of Trail: Out and back; paved road open to bicycles and hikers but not motor vehicles.
Elevation Gain: 40 feet / 12 meters.
Mudpot Special
Pocket Basin reveals a close-up view of colorful hot springs and bubbling mudpots. Experience the wonders of this dynamic geologic hot spot as we explore a backcountry thermal area along the famous Firehole River.

Garnet Hill lies at the heart of Yellowstone's famed northern range, home of vast herds of wildlife and beautiful meadows. Hike through Pleasant Valley into the forest glen of Elk Creek and along the roaring Yellowstone River as we circle Garnet Hill on this "gem" of a trail.
Type of Trail: Loop; stagecoach dirt road and maintained trail.
Elevation Gain: 300 feet / 90 meters.
The Ranger Adventure Hiking Series is offered as a fee activity. Fee programs are those activities that go beyond the scope of the parks basic interpretive programs, serve a small segment of the visiting public, and tend to be relatively expensive to offer. Fees charged for these hikes go directly back into the program's budget and help to provide staff and supplies for the activities. They are not intended to replace free interpretive programs.
Purchase tickets in advance for a Ranger Adventure Hike at visitor centers in Canyon, Fishing Bridge, Grant Village, Mammoth or Old Faithful. The price is $ 15.00 per adult (ages 16+), $ 5.00 for youth (ages 15 to 7), and free for children ages 6 and under. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED!

Ranger led winter wildlife tours and evening programs are enjoyable ways to learn about Yellowstone National Park's winter ecology and natural and scenic wonders. Winter visitors can enhance their visit to Yellowstone by participating in the many programs currently being offered in the Mammoth Hot Springs, Old Faithful, and West Yellowstone areas.

| Snowshoe Yellowstone ~ Starts: 18 Dec 03 - Ends: 25 Feb 03 This guided snowshoe walk will enlighten you on the diversity of life in winter as you silently traverse the snow with a park ranger. Advance reservations are required. Please sign up for the walk by calling: 307-344-2263 or stopping by Albright Visitor Center. A limited number of snowshoes are available free of charge or they can be rented for $ 8.00 (half day) from the Bear Den Ski Shop next to the Mammoth Hotel. | Winter Speaker Series ~ 17 Jan 03 Yellowstone National Park and the Grizzly Discovery Center, an educational non-profit bear and wolf preserve, will kick-off the second annual Winter Speaker Series on 17 Jan 03. This free slide program is titled: Wonderland in Winter: 25 Years of Inspiration for the Special Beauty of Yellowstone in Winter. The public is invited to attend this program featuring renowned photographer and Yellowstone winter keeper Jeff Henry, who will explore Yellowstone's magnificent beauty in winter. The program will take place at the Grizzly Discovery Center auditorium, 210 South Canyon Street. Lasts: 1 hour. |

This program is designed for children from 5 - 12 years of age and their families. Participants explore the winter world of snow, ice and steam through activities focusing on geology, wildlife adaptations, weather, snow crystals and more. In addition to completing an age-appropriate activity paper, participants attend a program led by a park ranger, record wildlife observations, make a record of geyser and hot spring activity, and hike, ski, or snowshoe a trail.
Children can participate by requesting the program at either the Mammoth or Old Faithful visitor centers. For $3.00 they receive an activity paper, as well as equipment and materials to assist them in the completion of required activities. "Snowpacks", containing a thermometer, hand lens, and other tools help with data collection. Snowshoes provide a fun and efficient way to make explorations, and are available at Mammoth specifically for use by Junior Rangers and their families. Upon completion of the program, children return to the visitor center to have their work reviewed by a park ranger, and receive an embroidered patch. Fees collected through this program help maintain the program, allow for the continued development of new program components, and provide high school students summer jobs working with Junior Rangers.
This new program was a natural offshoot of Yellowstone's well-established summer Junior Ranger program, which awards 15,000 patches each summer. Most parks offer some sort of Junior Ranger program, and many children enjoy collecting the great variety of patches and badges offered.
